Italia 2005 - Sorrento to Pompeii

Days 4-6, to Southern Italy! Sorrento, Amalfi, Capri, and Pompeii.

The view from the hotel balcony in Sorrento. Creeping up on the far left is Mount Vesuvius and the Bay of Naples. This hotel was great despite the fact that it was on top of a mountain (like all things are in Italy)	From Sorrento we drove the Italbus through a gut-wrenching road through the Amalfi Coast.	I could make a living turning these into wallpapers, or just living here and taking pictures.
Just to give you an idea of what the road was like...	I think this is the town of Positano. We had to stop traffic in a few towns just to get through.	A better view of the city's bay.
Finally at Amalfi! Still on the highway here looking down at the harbor.	Free at last from the Italbus! This is the spectacular view from the harbor.	I wish I had a house here...
The island of Capri, the largest island in the Bay of Naples. This reminds me of Maui (except it's a tad colder)	The view of the town from the city center. We were here on Easter.	After mass, lunch, and some shopping, we took a tour around the island. I've never seen such beautiful scenery.
Again like in Hawaii, the clouds just hit the sides of the mountains and roll right up.	This might be the entrance to the Blue Grotto, which was closed due to choppy water. Supposedly 3 at a time go in and have to lie down in a rowboat so the rocks don't smash it to pieces. Another time...;)	Another stunning rock formation.
Back to Naples, and the giant area that once was a bustling city: Pompeii.	A theater that is in surprisingly good condition (not counting the new iron and stage). I wonder how they did lights for these plays :P	A view of Mt. Vesuvius from Pompeii. Now imagine a HUGE cloud of ash coming from it...
The monument to Caesar, required in all Roman towns.	This blows my mind, after more than 2000 years there's STILL paintings here. I'd love to build or do something someday that will last that long.	The warehouse for pottery and other items that was collected during the dig. When they found skeletons, plaster of paris was poured in the hole made by the ash, and now we have casts to see just how the people got through.
"BEWARE OF THE DOG" in Latin from centuries ago. I need one of these in front of my house. Note that it's all mosaic work, this wasn't cheap to have put in.	The streets all had stepping stones like this so people could cross them when it rained, etc. Awesome pic imo.
